The Geological and Mining Park is ideally located at the heart of Catalonia, including Collbató (Baix Llobregat) and almost all the municipalities in the Bages region.
A land of contrasts where geology and the associated mining works constitute a good part of the landscape and have become a rich natural and cultural heritage. An area with extremely interesting history, deeply rooted culture, exquisite local cuisine, important Roman heritage and nature to explore.
The collaboration between the Bages County Council and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia to assess this heritage dates a few years back. Its great potential was soon made obvious, as it helped explain an important part of the geological history and the human occupation of the territory.
The Park aims at giving an answer to the need of restoring the mining and geological heritage, promoting its conservation and turning it into a resource for the sustainable development of the region through various lines of action such as promotion, conservation, education, research in geosciences and tourism.
The Department of Mining Engineering and Natural Resources of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia completes the Master Plan in 2007, and step by step, it gradually creates the Park at the beginning of 2011, under the leadership of the Bages County Council, with the involvement of an increasing number of municipalities. There had already been some scientific papers on this Geological and Mining Park presented to different international conferences back in 2003-2007.
In order to ensure a proper management and the public use of the geological and mining heritage, the Park is organised as a Board. This institution guarantees a democratic and authonomous participation of all the municipalities. From the people to the regional administrations through the academic institutions and private companies, the Park aims at integrating the main social agents in the region, sharing the purpose of the project.
